Lots of information has been in the press recently about Forever Chemicals and Toxins in our furniture and everyday items like saucepans. These make up a very high proportion of our sofas and chairs in our home. The foam and fabric are soaked and coated in these chemicals to make them Fire Retardant. Regulations brought in in the 1980’s for safety reasons, also brought these into our homes. No piece of furniture made or restored since then will be without these chemicals and toxins. Use of these chemicals is currently under review with the government. The UK is the only country to use these chemicals. Fire risk has improved across the whole world, not just the UK. This is due to a reduction in smoking and chip pans and the increase in smoke detectors in the home, not because of these chemicals.
